Tips for Treating Nail Fungus

Nail fungus can be a very painful and unattractive ailment. It will occur when fungi infects the finger or toenail. Toenail fungus is much more difficult to treat due to its dark, moist environment – a place where fungi thrive. Although these infections can be tough to treat, there are home treatment options available that have proven to be quite successful.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a well-known anti-fungal and antiseptic. It can be found at natural food stores and the occasional pharmacy. It can be applied directly to the affected area by placing a few drops on the nail and then rubbing it in 2-3 times a day for a few days. It can also be mixed with olive oil to assure a great absorption.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Soak your nails in a solution of half apple cider vinegar and half warm water for twenty minutes before bed each night. Be sure to throughout dry your nails after soaking. Use a hairdryer to dry more thoroughly if necessary.

Oregano Oil

Mix two drops of oregano oil with a teaspoon of olive oil and apply the blend on the affected nails every day for no longer than three weeks. Oregano has a number of powerful properties including antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-fungal.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil can be used in conjunction with tea tree oil for prevention of skin irritation. It is also effective in fighting off infection.

Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Alpha hydroxy acid cream can be applied to the nails before bed as a prevention method. It works to remove rough skin that is prone to fungus growth.

Cotton Socks

It’s important to keep your feet dry to prevent the worsening or reoccurrence of toenail fungus. Cotton socks will absorb the moisture produced from the perspiration of your feet.

Avoid Nailpolish

Avoid nail polish use while recovering from nail fungus as nail polish can often irritate the afflicted area and bring more bacteria with its application.

Wash and Dry Feet

Always wash and dry your feet thoroughly after visiting a public pool, locker room, or spa. These areas are breeding grounds for contamination and it only takes on step into a puddle to catch an infection.

Keep Nailed Trimmed

Keep your nails trimmed short as long nails provide a space in which dirt and bacteria can get lodged. Cut the nails straight across and then file them down to a smooth edge.
